Safety Questions
After reading the Safety First! Article, please answer the following questions to stimulate your thinking about safety issues.
- Discuss what safety precautions should be taken so a person does not become crushed or trapped underneath a vehicle.
Never work under a car that is not on a drive on ramplift, or axle stands. This gives the car more support and is safer to work under. Be carfull when loosning and tightning bolts with a high tauque because unsteady jerks to a unstable car could tip the car dangerously. Final tightning of the bolts should be done with the wheels ferm on the ground to prevent damage to yourself and to the car.
- What problems could occur is someone started an engine, and another person was working on the engine under the bonnet.
If the person was working under the bonnet when the engine is turned on they could be prone to oil or other mechnical fluids splashing at them from preasure of the engine. Also other parts of the engine like the fan can cause harm to anyone with a hand or arm in the way.
- How could a fire be started on an engine?
When in a garage that is around fuels, oils or flammible gases don’t expose any naked flames or sparks. This could ignight any of the above listed and cause mager harm. Also a circuit with a build up of electrisity can cause this spark.
- How could an air bag be set off accidentally, and what damage could occur to a person with their head or neck near the steering wheel?
By not taking care when removing the stearing wheel of the car. This could cause the air bag to inflate with such speed that it could break or harm your body at contact
- How could a battery be accidentally exploded? What precautions should be taken to prevent this?
A car battery contains hydrogen that if in contact with any spark or flame will cause it to explode. Be carful when connecting the jumper leads to and from the battery so that it does not cause a spark.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
- Discuss how to prevent amputation from hydrofluoric acid exposure.
By taking care when exposed to the acid. Always where gloves and glasses when working around hydrofluoric acid. When finished with these items make sure to through them away in the right manner. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
- What damage can you do to yourself with diesel injectors?
Beacause the diesel injectore fuel is pumped at a very high preasure it can penitrate skin if it comes into contact.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
- What damage can occur from having a ring or wrist watch on when working on a vehicle?
They can get cought on objects on the car or scratch the car tht you are working on. Or worse the metal on the items cac connect with things like the battery when you are working on them and would conduct the electrical flow causing harm to yourself.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
- What problems could occur from loose fitting clothing or long hair when working around the moving parts of an engine?
Loose fitted clothing is not protective to your body when it comes to working around heavy equiptment and harmfull fluids. Long hair can get caught in moving parts of the engine bay of the car. All of these reasons are why you wear protective clothing with long hair tide up.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
- What can happen if a vehicle is not left in park, or the brake applied when it is in the shop?
When a vehical is not left with the break applied or in park then the car is free to move with any force applied to it. This can cause the vehical to roll into any part of the work shop or person causing harm either way.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
- Describe how to use a fire extinguisher.

Pull the pin at the top of the extinguisher. Aim at the base of the flames. Push in the leaver slowly and move across the flame to extinguish._______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
- What chemicals around a vehicle are hazardous and why?
Potensionaly all chemicals around the vehical are hazardous when swollowed or exposed to to much of the chemical without ventilasion. Also if the some of the chemicals are flamible then if exposed to a flame or spark can cause great harm.________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
